Michael Richards (Kramer on Seinfeld) was doing a comedic stand up act in a night club (the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles) when two black men in the audience (Frank McBride and Kyle Doss) began to heckle him. Richards’ stopped his act and let out a stream of racially charged fury. Said Richards in part, “Throw his [expletive] out. He’s a [n-word]. He’s a [n-word]. He’s a [n-word]. A [n-word]! Look there’s a [n-word]. oooh! ooh!” Many in the crowd responded with their own racially laced swearing and someone screamed out, “It’s not funny. That’s why you’re a reject. Never had no shows, never had no movies. ‘Seinfeld’ — that’s it.” Richards unsuccessfully tried to regain composure and control over the audience, but moments later, he walked off the stage.
Shortly after the incident, Richards appeared on the Tonight Show with David Letterman and said, “I lost my temper on stage. I was at a comedy club trying to do my act, and I got heckled, and I took it badly, and went into a rage and said some pretty nasty things to some Afro-Americans, a lot of trash talk.”
The Reverand Al Sharpton, possibly one of the dumbest people to ever have lived, said of the incident, “I cannot accept his apology. He called me yesterday to say sorry, but it’s not my place to accept that on behalf of all blacks. I can forgive, but I’m not the victim here. What he said hurt a lot of people.”
Frank and Kyle went on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 and demanded a personal apology and possibly some money from Richards.
I’m confused here. Were Michael Richards’ comments incredibly inappropriate, outrageous and offensive? Yes, without argument. All the same, I’m uncertain why money has entered into the equation. Can someone enlighten me? And if Frank and Kyle do deserve money, just how much is owed to them? Let’s discuss.

MONEY?!
Why would money make a lick of difference? If they do accept money as a means of an apology, does that mean I can ‘buy’ someone’s offensive feeling for cash?
Sooooo, what’s your price for being called a racial slur? If I pay you $1M could I call those guys a (n-word), repeatedly, and they CAN’T be offended?
Offense is such a subjective thing. What one person thinks/feels was offensive, another simply ignores, or it doesn’t even register on the radar of conscious thought.
IMHO: respect, dignity, and tolerance are not for sale.

The money part threw me too. I understand being offended by what Richards said; it was crude and simply unacceptable. Asking for money however just cheapens the whole situation and seems to lower the gentlemen down to Richards’ level.
I am reminded of “slavery reparations” wherein a certain contingent of black Americans believe the United States government should pay out large sums of money to all black Americans because of injuries committed in the past to black Americans. Although the two aren’t exactly the same, they seem to be in a related vein.

What I find less than humorous is that the offended parties seem to have forgotten calling Richards a \”white cracka\”. Now maybe it isn\’t true. Maybe they didn\’t use a similarly charged racial slur in referring to him.
In the end…I\’m sick and tired of racism. Whether it be blacks, asians, hispanics, indians, islanders, or even whites…why can\’t people be taken on their merits?
I\’m tired of whites being seen as racist just because they\’re whites. Yes, there are white racists. Many of them like to shave their heads and call them selves white supremists…but there are blacks who believe in black supremacy. There are asians who believe in asian supremacy. Any time that you get a large enough group of human beings together there will evolve a group within that group that believes in their supremacy. Is this human nature? Well, if it is then maybe we all need to overcome nature. We do it in so many other ways (Climate Control, Medical Technology, Climbing to overcome gravity to name a few), why not in this case? A very wise man once said, \”…the natural man is an enemy…\”. How about we overcome this natural tendency to believe in our own supremacy and be friends instead?
Let me finalize…
Recently I heard or read from someone who said that there is no such thing as a black race, a white race, etc. Sorry, my memory isn\’t so great, I don\’t remember who it was…I guess that means I\’m not supreme. I agree. I believe that there is one race, the HUMAN race. And yes, I am for the human race. Maybe that makes me a racist? If it does then I hope my brothers of all skin tones will join with me and try to improve life for our race.
