Our strategy was to be somewhat conservative: we stayed at middle-tier hotels, flew economy class, ate at standard restaurants, did not rent a car, and purchased only a few souvenirs. Oh, you should know that Brazil requires American citizens to have a visa in addition to a passport in order to enter their country, so that added a couple hundred dollars to the total.
